The first sight of the pink flamingos living in the wet lands of the Camargue, reminded me of a story about a flamingo that befriended a cat.  This unlikely partnership became best friends and went everywhere together, after a while, the flamingo noticed that every time they went for a drink, the cat never bought a round of drinks and this ultimately began to grate on the patience of the flamingo – the only irritation in what was a beautiful friendship.  The flamingo, believed that the best way to approach this was to discuss openly its concerns with the cat, so one night down the pub (where the flamingo bought the drinks) the topic was broached.  The cat wasn’t upset, instead he seemed to accept the comments on the chin, and after a while, the cat said “I don’t know why your surprised, have you never heard the saying – where there a long- legged bird, there’s a tight cat ( I think that’s how the story went 🙂 )

George is now firmly of the belief that his name is Géorgé and will no longer answer to his name if we pronounce it with a hard G ( he’s in for a nasty surprise when we get to Germany). However, walking along the seafront with a black Labrador does make for its own surprises.  Today, whilst walking, a young french lady gave a beaming smile and came running towards us with arms outstretched. With my heart racing and my partners “fight or flight” reaction kicking in, it turns out she was going to hug the dog! Ah well !

This incident, coupled with the fact that the waiter brought his water to the table in a champagne bucket today, has I fear, gone to his head. In fact, had we wanted to swap him for a middle aged Frenchman, also called Géorge, the wife of the couple next to us over lunch would have been more than happy to.

With the day spent at the beach and fresh sea food salad lunch, we can feel ourselves slowing down, we shall all sleep soundly tonight as we turn left tomorrow  and start our journey along the coast towards the Italian border.
